Many parents need help, friendship, advice or support during those early years when children are young. This page explains
what kind of support we provide, and tells you if your family is likely to be eligible. It also outlines the procedure we
follow if you do ask us for help.

What support does Home-Start offer?
Home-Start offers a volunteer, who is also a parent, to visit the family’s home. Our volunteers understand the
joys and frustrations of bringing up children, because they have been there too.
The volunteer normally visits once a week for two to three hours, sharing their time and friendship over as long a period
as necessary. What exactly the volunteer does depends on the family's particular needs. He or she might spend time with a
young parent, helping to build their confidence as they adapt to life with a young baby. Or go to the park with a family who
finds getting out of the house difficult. The visits mighr involve offering an extra pair of hands to a family with several
children, or simply providing a listening ear to someone who finds parenting a challenge. It all depends on what will most
help the family.
The aim in the longer term is to prepare the family so they will eventually be able to cope without Home-Start support,
but there is no time limit for this. It may be a couple of months – or it may be a couple of years.

Who can ask for Home-Start support?
Anyone, as long as they have at least one child under the age of five. A parent may be struggling with the demands of
young children at home. There may be practical difficulties, such as illness, bereavement or disability in the family. Perhaps
a parent feels isolated, or has post-natal depression. Maybe an extra pair of hands is needed to cope with twins or triplets.
Or maybe a mother or father is just finding parenting a real struggle.
Being a parent is the hardest job in the world – and there is no training for it! Many parents feel overwhelmed
or exhausted by the stresses of everyday life. Too often they have no close family members or friends they can turn to for
help and encouragement, or a breathing space when they need it. Lack of support at a crucial stage may increase the risk
of the family breaking up. Fortunately, help is readily available from Home-Start.

How does a family ask for support?
Families can simply ask us for help, though very often a Health Visitor, Social Worker, GP or any other professional
working with the family refers the family to us. We do not provide support for a family without the family’s own consent.
We ask whooever is asking us to provide support (such as the Health Visitor, etc.) to complete a referral form.
The purpose of this is to give us some basic information about the family. Once a referral form has been completed, in consultation
with the family, a Home-Start co-ordinator will arrange to visit the family at home. She will also talk to whoever referred
the family.
If we feel the referral is appropriate, and a suitable volunteer is available, then we tell the family and the person
who referred them that Home-Start is able to help. The co-ordinator always accompanies volunteers on their first visit and
introduces them to the family.
